The DEA estimates CJNG has a presence in at least 24 of Mexico’s 32 states. The CJNG is known as not only one of the largest and most powerful Mexican cartels but one of the most violent as well. The arrests were made after a 6-month long investigation into the CJNG Cartel. Known for its kidnappings and brutal slayings, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel is lead by the notorious Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes.

The undisputed boss of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho," is charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine and methamphetamine in the U.S. and is considered one of law enforcement’s most wanted fugitives. The DEA has a $10 million reward for information leading to his arrest.

Several of Cervantes' children also make up some of the leaders of the CJNG Cartel. His son, Oseguera González is second in command under his father is in custody and is being held without bond on previous charges stemming from drug distribution charges in the United States. Oseguera's sister, known as "La Negra," is said to be the primary money launderer for the CJNG Cartel. The CJNG is said to be active in many large US cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Houston, and Atlanta, just to name a few.

CJNG is thought to be one of the fastest-growing, transnational criminal organizations in Mexico. President Trump signed an Executive Order in February of 2020 that directed Federal Law Enforcement agencies “to thwart transnational criminal organizations and subsidiary organizations, including criminal gangs, cartels, racketeering organizations, and other groups engaged in illicit activities that present a threat to public safety and national security.”

In what was described as "Phase one" Project Python was launched shortly after that directive was issued and is one of the largest drug cartel arrest operations in United States history.
